The Shambles in York is known to be one of England’s if not Europe’s finest examples of a medieval street. It has many overhanging timber built shops and houses. It has been around for about 900 years and was named in the Domesday book. The cobbled street, is so narrow, that at its narrowest, you can almost outstretch your arm from the windows of the upper floors and touch the other side.

The name 'Shambles' itself comes from the Saxon 'Fleshammels' which is interpreted as 'butcher street'. Here the street was lined with butchers shop hanging out the meat on hooks outside there shops with animals kept and slaughtered in the back. Many of the original hooks are still present however all the shops have been replaced with mainly gift and antique shops making it a haven for visitors and is one of York’s most popular shopping streets.

The Shambles is also home to the shrine of Saint Margaret Clitherow. She was known as the 'Pearl of York' and was born in around 1556. Daughter of the Sheriff of York, she married a wealthy butcher 'John Clitherow' who lived on the Shambles. Shortly after her marriage she converted to catholism. With the ever increased pressure of the protestants and the outlawing of Catholicism she refused to convert and was condemned for harbouring catholic priests and holding secret masses at York Tyburn. She was arrested and sent to the Castle and later sentenced to killed horrifically by being crushed under the weight of stones placed above her on top of a large door. Defiant till the end her last words where "God be thanked, I am not worthy of so good a death as this".
