York has many attractions to offer one of England finest historical Cities and the Merchants Adventurers Hall is one of most popular attractions with tourists and locals alike.. The Merchants Adventurers Hall of York was built in the mid fourteenth century is an exceptional example of a medieval guildhall and is one of the best preserved in merchants halls in the whole of Europe. The hall has been renovated over later years. In 1356, Sir William Percy granted the lands to where the hall was built, to three of York’s merchants whom became collect ably known as ‘The Guild of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary’. They where a charitable society and helped the poor of York as well as hold banquets and weddings in the Great Hall. The Merchants Adventurers Hall comprises three rooms serving the three different functions that a medieval guild would require. There is the magnificent great hall where guild members would meet for business meetings as well as courts and social meetings. When the Hall was being built they had to make the room double nave because no oak timbers where found that would be large enough to span the width of the large design. There was the chapel at the end of the undercroft which was built in the early fifteenth century showing real craftsmanship in brick and stone work of the time. Originally it had three alters and statues of the saints that where worshiped. There is also a hospital in the undercroft of the Merchants Adventurers Hall. This is where over the centuries many of the deprived would be cared and fed up until the end of the eighteenth century. At present the furnishings of the chapel date from the mid seventeenth century. It is located on Piccadilly but is easily accessed from Fossgate.
