The ancient City of York is has a long and varied history. The Romans came to York in 71 AD after they invaded the shore of England in 43. The roman name for York was 'Eboracum' and was a strategic strong hold for the 9 th Battalion. They built a fort where the six thousand strong regiment was based. They built York into one of the most strategic and important cities in England with fine temples and baths. Some of the Roman baths have survived to this day as well as other Roman artifacts and are displayed in a city centre public house called 'The Roman Baths' in St Samson Square.

Later, it was the turn of the Vikings in the year 866 AD. They sailed up the river Ouse in there Longboats and fought it out with the local Saxon settlers. It was all way to much a one sided affair. The Viking built the city into the capital of the Viking Empire.

Most of the city is enclosed by the ancient city walls that have stood here since Roman times when they where built to on the banks of the river Ouse to protect the town. The many ancient streets of York have many strange happenings and bumps in the night and is known as one of the most haunted Cities in Europe. Many of the public house's walls have many a ghost story to tell. The Black Swan, which is one of the cities oldest has many a haunting tale to tell. To celebrate the many occurrences, there are many ghost walks and pub crawls that take place in the dead of the night providing a thought provoking evening of story telling and folklore. The 'Ghost trail' starts outside the Minister at 7:30pm as well as the 'Original ghost Walk of York' which starts from the King's arms pub at the Ouse Bridge at 8:00pm.

An other way to take in the sight and sound of this beautiful City is one of the many open top bus tours which take you around many of the fabulous York attractions, including Cliffords tower, the Castle Museum and the City walls. There are also the many boat trips that take you along the river Ouse which include a floodlit evening cruise or a spooky look at the ghosts that plague the rivers history on a Ghost cruise, one of the cities scariest but good humoured attractions

The city has many museums charting the historical value of York. The Castle Museum lets you experience life as it was in the Victorian times. You can walk down a period cobbled street and visit the small shops as they were. The Museum was once a Prison and has the cell in which the notorious highway man 'Dick Turpin' was held before he was hanged on the Knavesmire (now home to the York Race track).

The Barley Hall is one of the cities fine York attractions, taking you back into the time of the War of the Roses. This finely restored medieval house offers a fine collection of glass, pottery and metal wares as well as a marvelous audio tour by Dame Judy Dench.

The Jorvik Viking Museum lets you experience what life was like in the Viking age and discover how they live in and around the city. You can enjoy craft demonstrations as well as a tour through a reconstruction of a Viking age street. Special events are held all through the year including one of York's spectacular events, The Jorvik Viking Festival.

Whatever you choose to do. York is a fascination and historic city to visit.
